In 2026, 10 people attended the Translation Lab. Our application pool included 26 applicants from the US and 23 applicants from outside the U.S. Art Omi's goal is to invite approximately 75% of our residents from outside the U.S. See our past residents here.

Translation Lab: Fri, Sept 3 - Wed, Sept 15, 2027

Art Omi: Writers hosts authors and translators from around the world for residencies throughout the spring and fall. The program’s strong international emphasis provides exposure for global literary voices and reflects the spirit of cultural exchange that is essential to Art Omi’s mission.    

Translation Lab 2027 is a 12-day special, intensive residency for five collaborating writer-translator teams in the fall of 2027. Translators, writers, editors, and agents can submit an application.

Art Omi will host five translators of any language INTO English, along with the writers whose work is being translated, in New York's Hudson Valley for 12 days. All text-based projects—fiction, creative nonfiction, theater, film, poetry, etc.—are eligible.

This focused residency will provide an integral stage of refinement, allowing translators to dialogue with the writers about text-specific questions. It will also serve as an essential community-builder for English-language translators who are working to increase the amount of international literature available to English-language readers.

Art Omi provides airfare, local car transportation, and a small honorarium. Residents accepted into Translation Lab are responsible for their own train transportation from New York City to the Art Omi campus.     PLEASE NOTE: accepted applicants must be available for the duration of the Translation Lab. Late arrivals and early departures are NOT possible. Please do not submit a proposal unless both parties involved (translator and writer) are available for all dates. Please also ensure both parties are eligible to travel to the United States at the time of the application.

 Each application must include a Project Proposal and a Work Sample.

1. The Project Proposal should be no more than three pages and provide the following information:

• Names of the translator and writer applying, as well as contact information (physical address, email, and phone number) and the original language of the text. These details should be provided at the very top of the proposal.
• Brief biographical sketches for the translator and writer.
• A description of the proposed project, including details about how you envision structuring your working time together.
• Publishing status of the proposed project. (Projects that do not yet have a publisher are eligible.)

2. The Work Sample must be 10-15 pages (12 pt font, double-spaced) of an English translation by the translator applying. It is preferred that the sample be from the proposed project; however, if this is not possible, please provide another translation work sample.

To be considered for a 2027 residency, your application must be submitted electronically via Submittable by the end of the day on July 1, 2026 (11:59 PM EST).
Notifications will be provided in early January 2027.

Each applicant is required to provide three (3) separate items in total:

1. A brief (2 pages maximum) statement about your work history, referencing publications, performances, and writing credits. This can be submitted in CV format.
2. A writing sample between 10-15 pages. The work sample does not have to be published or related to your current project and can be a combination of multiple samples. Your writing sample does NOT have to be an English translation, though this is preferred if you have one available. Please submit your writing sample in your mother tongue if you are not able to provide a professionally done English translation. All other documentation must be submitted in English.
3. A description (1 page maximum) of the work to be undertaken while at Art Omi: Writers.

Alumni of the program are eligible to reapply after 5 years. Other applicants can apply once every 2 years, or every other cycle, unless they were waitlisted the previous year, in which case they may reapply the following year.

RESIDENCY DATES: Thursday, August 12–Monday, August 33, 2027 We look forward to becoming acquainted with your work. Note that because of the large number of applications we receive, we are unable to offer feedback on your application. It may be useful to know that many Music fellows have applied multiple times before being offered a residency.  Using this online application, you will be asked to upload a single audio or video work sample of no longer than 4 minutes total. Your work sample may include up to three excerpts (including more than a single excerpt is highly recommended). Please only include work created in the last five years. You will be asked to indicate the year created and your role in each work—whether you are composer, performer, or both—what instruments/performers are featured, and whether the work is improvised, composed, a combination, or digitally produced). Do not indicate cue points on longer excerpts or direct the panel to other samples online. If you supply a longer work sample longer than 4 minutes, or include a work sample containing more than three excerpts, your application will not be considered.  You will also be asked to provide a very brief bio (100 words or fewer) and a short narrative explaining why you would like to attend Art Omi: Music at this point in your career.  Additional fields will allow you to provide information about your country of origin (and country where you live if different), any instruments you might perform with while in residence, and your primary role as a music-maker. A Note to Ensembles: The Art Omi: Music program will only consider applications from individuals applying as individuals. Joint applications will not be considered. Individuals members of performing ensembles may apply simultaneously, but will be evaluated as individual musicians. It is highly unlikely that members of ensembles will be invited to attend during the same residency. A goal of the Art Omi: Music program is to encourage and foster participation in new collaborative environments—ongoing collaborators are discouraged from applying simultaneously for the same residency.

A Note to Art Omi: Music Alumni Wishing to Re-Apply: As we can only have so few residents in a session, it is not possible at this time to accept applications from those who have already attended Art Omi: Music. Note: To prepare an audio work sample, you may wish to use the free Audacity sound editing software. You can download it here.
